How to Get Your Pet Ready for a Positive Experience at Their Veterinarian's Office

When you own a pet, going to the veterinarian's office is an essential part of keeping them healthy and happy. Whether you take them to the vet for check-ups and regular vaccinations, or for an emergency visit, be sure you are prepared to make their trip as safe and stress-free as possible. Here are some recommendations to help you prepare for your pet's veterinarian care with a positive experience each time.

Reduce Your Pet's Anxiety

One of the biggest reasons a veterinary visit can be difficult is due to the stress and anxiety your pet will experience during the trip and visit, in addition to your own stress. Often, when you can remain calm and relaxed, your pet is going to sense your mood and react similarly. So if you are anxious before the visit, your pet is likely going to feel the tension and react stressfully.

Act normal before your vet visit and help your pet feel comfortable when you take them to their visit. If you act differently, for example, and treat them with much more anxious attention, they are going to know something is about to happen.

Practice With the Carrier and Transportation

When your pet needs to be taken to their vet appointment in a carrier, there is no other option than to do what you can to help them be comfortable. Put them into a pet carrier with some of their favorite items, such as a soft toy and a blanket. You may consider spraying the interior of the carrier with a pet pheromone, which can help calm them during their time inside the carrier.

It is also helpful if you associate the carrier in a neutral manner by leaving it out with their pet bed or food sitting inside of it. This is a better way to help them stay relaxed with the idea of going into the carrier than if you were to only pull the carrier out of a closet or storage for use when you plan to take them to the vet.

If your pet is okay with being on a leash when they go to their visit, be sure they are safely secured inside your vehicle during transport. Look for a vehicle safety harness or restraint that they can be strapped in with in the event that you get in a car crash.

Prepare for Emergency Visits

It is also helpful to plan for the financial side of your pet's health by making sure you can pay for their healthcare. You can look at investing in pet insurance for regular check-ups and vaccinations and to also treat emergency visits. Sometimes emergency vet visits can become quite expensive, so plan to start a pet savings account to cover any unexpected health emergencies.

If you find yourself needing to go to an animal hospital, be sure to follow these tips to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
